Nigeria @56
Thought of this day had clouded my mind as September drew to and end. I reminisced on the Yester-years and compared them to the realities of this year. I was almost in tears about the state of the nation and the need to ceremonially remember this day midst the poverty stricken nature of today. The recession has bitten so hard that even the affluent bite their fingers. All in the name of building a better Nigeria.

Many woke with regrets, curses, hate speeches, and wrath about the historical event of today. Many denigrated independence and went as far as saying we would have been better had we remained in the tyrant hands of our colonial masters, (What a shame full thought). The pains truly is enormous, but is the disdain needful? Does it help?

The very first part of my independence talk today started with a whatsapp debate on defending that Nigeria is not foolish by a youth who was too bitter that he allowed emotions cloud his sense of reasoning. Next was the epic Nigeria @56 Independence note of Mr. Reuben Abati. It was so on point and reflective of a true patriot who believes in victory beyond adversity.

Friends, while we sorrow about our economy all these days, do we still forget the identity independence brought us? The freedom? The sense of brotherhood and Unity? Isnt it our irrational actions that are making the efforts of our Heroes past to seem regretful? Its really a time to reflect not just on the hardship that befall us, but also to appreciate the good things that have come our way, the Talents, the skills, the doggedness, the oneness, the relative peace and unity.

Yes its not been an easy road, but has there never been a reason to say thanks to God almighty who made me a Nigerian?
Lets believe in the Nigerian of our dream coming to reality soon, for therein can we find the justification to ACT right in our little ways and build a formidable nation that all the world will be amazed.

May God direct our noble course and guide our leaders right. May He help our youths the truth to know and to grow in love and honesty. That great lofty heights we may attain, to build a nation where Peace and justice Shall reign.

I believe in a conducive and comfortable territorial space where my dreams shall be realized, my purpose accomplished and my generation applauded for greatness. What about YOU?

Happy Independence Nigeria!
Happy Independence to the efforts of our great patriots!
Happy independence to the land wherein my umblical cord was buried!
Obiyo Daniel C.
