Part 1: The Foundation of Personal Leadership   Welcome to our series on Building Personal Leadership! True leadership starts from within. John C. Maxwell's had this to say about leadership- "Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge." To take care of those in your charge, you need to have the capacity to understand their unique needs and challenges. You need to be steps ahead of them to understand their fears, worries, concerns and thereby provide relevant answers to their questions. Leaders who exert impact in the life of others are leaders who lead from personal experiences and who first invest in personal leadership. You can not give what you don’t have. If you attempt to do so, you will only feed them theories and leave them clueless on how to practice them. People stick to leaders who are masters at leading themselves. Hence, in your leadership journey, the best place to start is PERSONAL LEADERSHIP. ...

LIMITING BELIEFS

Image
Let's Talk About Limiting Beliefs! So through the weekend, I had a power-packed online conference I attended that repositioned my life and I'm sure many of us here also attended that summit - Headstart Summit. One of the Major takeaways I had from that summit was - Destroy Limiting Beliefs. While I paid close attention to the 17 different power speakers of that conference, from Disruptor Ubong King, to Disruptive Creator Kunle Soriyan. I discovered that significant progress in life is bounded (Permitted and Restricted) by our belief system. No matter your business or professional inclination, you are at the mercy of your mind. In fact, your business goals, financial projections, leadership goals, management targets are as big as your minds eyes can see. So if it's about the mind, you can understand why it's about our belief system right? Because  our mind is the headquarters of our beliefs. It not only processes those thoughts, it also decide to what extent you can even...

THE BRAIN: POWERFUL DETERMINANT FOR ACTIVATION OF POTENTIALS

Image
The brain is the number one evidence and epitome of gabbage in gabbage out. I have heard some people say "Oh if I read this for a long time, my brain will explode. Lol, sweetheart that is super untrue.  Research has it that, only 2% of the human brain has been used 98% remains mostly  unused, so there ain't an explosion that comes from maximizing the brains capacity. Our brain weighs 1.4 kilogram and suprisingly has 14 billion nerve cells, so it has the ability to contain large stock of information, larger that has ever been stuffed into anyone's brain.  A great research was made by some neurosurgeons in their bid to understand the capacity of the human brain. This research was carried out with two categories of brains which were : The brain of a freshly dead professor and that of an illiterate who left his brain dormant. It took pretty time to do this great comparism and GUESS WHAT!!!🤩🤭😌😁😁😁 There  was no difference between the brains when compared...

IFEMUN 2018: Grooming Leaders for UN Responsibility

Living in a century with varying opinions, societal perceptions,  negligible level of interest in international relations,  and a moderately conscious youth class, the succession of the UN becomes of imperative concern. In a bid to address this, the UN decided to throw it's informative, and resource driven weight to the organization of Model United Nations around the world. Between 21st - 23rd of June 2018, The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife in conjunction with the United Nations Information Center (UNIC)  in Nigeria,  organized the first IFE Model United Nations Conference. This was one of the numerous MUN conferences that gather over 400,000 delegates in general every year. This conference had a delegate-count of about 250 Nigeria, Cameroon and South African delegates in attendance. 5 committees were simulated including the Security Council. The Secretary General of the UN, Mr. Antonio Guterres was represented by the National Information Officer of UNIC, ...

Virtue Series 9: Moderation in Leadership.

Image
To so many,  it sounds counterintuitive to talk about moderation and leadership at the same time.  This weird feeling is most often seen in people whose perspective of leadership is that of "authority and power". Leadership is really beyond coercion of will but achievement of goals. However,  the place of moderation generally in life cannot be downplayed, not to talk about it's place in leadership. Effective lead ers understand that moderation transcends finding a middle ground in decision making, but culminates into skillfully circum-navigating and managing the complexities leadership poses without being overwhelmed by its challenges. A leader needs to imbibe moderation in every thing he does if he must avoid extreme polarization which has become the norm in today's society. He must learn to curtail his expenses even when he has it in excess. He needs to be moderate in his expression and reactions to avoid creating indelible scars and regrets. ...

Virtue Series 8: Justice in leadership

Image
If there is a line of statement that thrills me each time I remember it, it is the preamble of the Declaration of Independence of America. It emphasized on the equality of humanity and the truth that all men deserves to be treated justly. Justice is a virtue that upholds truth and test integrity of heart. It is the determining factor of the moral standpoint of what ever action is taken. It is the melting point of conflicts with a veto power that can make or mar situations, people and relationships. As a leader,  being just entails doing right to anyone irrespective of their past experiences and fall-outs with you. It includes signing the promotion of that employee when it is due, irrespective of how unhappy you're with his/her approach to work.  It means upholding meritocracy against nepotism. It preaches sound evaluation of any scenario or complaint brought to your table before taking a decision. It calls for fairness even when you'll have to step on toes. Have you e...

Virtue Series 6: Industrious Leader

Ben Franklin had this to say about being industrious, "Industry: Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions." In life,  there are a whopping lot of things waiting to be attended to within the limited 24hours. But guess what?  70% of them are not worth prioritizing!  Most times we lose time being busy with things that do not worth our time. Being industrious cannot be achieved if the labour of your every second is channelled to unnecessary activities. As a leader,  you need to spend every second wisely.  Build people,  systems,  values,  achieve goals. Let your every action culminate into productivity and lead to the achievement of your goals. Be busy with a purpose. Feed your mind with information and engage in actions that produce results.  An industrious leader fosters creativity in himself and his followers. He doesn't give room for idleness. He gives time for leisure,  but doesn't allow...

Virtue Series 3: ORDER IN LEADERSHIP

Image
Have you ever wondered why no one teaches you Algebra without first teaching Arithmetic? Why when you want to produce liquid soap, you're told to stir in one direction only after putting some chemicals in a specific order? Why you need to pass High school exam before going into College? Why the sun comes out in the day and not at night? Why you need to have foundational knowledge of human biology before you can comprehend neurology? I am sure that experience has taught you, how much loss you incur jumping the order of natural course. The truth remains, Knowledge is build from piece of interconnected information that make sense when received in the right order. There are a lot of information you may come across today that will never be useful for you, until you have gotten some other level or experience or knowledge. This is so because we live in a world where order makes things fit. We have a brain built on the principle of orderliness. We have a mind that best work when se...

Virtue Series 5: FRUGALITY IN LEADERSHIP

Image
After 6months Mr. Peterson always changes the company cars. He thinks making a profit of over $6million after tax deductions in 6months, and having a stable business finance, is big enough to buy every other thing he needs and live a bit more flamboyant. Funny enough, he sells this car to some companies that uses it for a minimum of 1year and six months without having any need for a change. They save some cash by buying it cheaper, and using it longer. Who is wiser? It’s fun when business grows great enough that you experience a constant boom that enhances your financial stability. But, where lies the wisdom in spending the profits on trivial things forgetting there is such a thing as economic depression? Lack of frugality in business financial management has made many start-ups to plummet and eventually get into extinction. There is always a new tech-gadget and a new equipment in the market. But do you really NEED it? There are new and more sophisticated techniques of get...

Virtue Series: TEMPERANCE IN LEADERSHIP

In Ben Franklin's short explanation of Temperance,  he wrote,  " Eat not to dullness;  drink not to elevation ".  What ever may have inspired him to write this opening thoughts, must have been drawn from experience. Using food and drink to analyse temperance is quite apt because those two items have made so many people lose their chills countless times. Temperance in leadership reflects the consciousness of a leader to the point of restrain. It means his knowing when '' enough is really enough " and not pushing further.  It entails the ability to manage his or her environmental occurrences that they do not dictate the outcomes and ruin her expectation. Temperance is a virtue that helps a leader marry wisdom, knowledge,  integrity and courage together to attain worthwhile success. Let's break it down in practical terms. Temperance is that virtue a leader possess that helps him/her control her appetite and emotions. It helps the leader not to ge...

The Power of Words (1)

Image
Derrick was a linguistic student who graduated with a first class grade from a prestigious institution. He decided to pick up a job with a media company as an Editor. Two weeks after he got the job, the company started experiencing a decline in their sales. The management tried to improve graphics contents, enrolled their marketers for some 3days professional marketing, yet there was no improvement in customers interest. On the grounds of passing-comment, one of the management staff decided to read one of the recent publications, and also ask some customers about their constructive criticism on their products. The response and findings of this BOSS rescued this big firm from bankruptcy. -The choice of words suddenly became obsolete, less persuasive and unappealing to readers. Derricks' poor choice of word skill was the canker! Have you ever regretted saying something to someone the way you said it?  Have you ever felt wrongly spoken to due to the words the speaker use...

Beyond Stigmatization!

It's true that AIDs it's real, but it's inhumane stigmatising her victims. With a heavy heart and deep sense of pain,  Bunmi walked out of the office of her boss. She had been recently diagnosed of HIV and Aids. However, it was still at an early stage. She had contracted it from a medical personnel who collected her blood samples with infected tools. On approaching her boss, He inquired about her mood and lax to work. While explaining, he got all furious, shocked,  judgemental, and drew hasty conclusions, that she was a flirt and suffered the consequences of her lifestyle. For the next 1week, his disgusting and disgruntled look at her were horrifying and tormenting. This stigmatization and deep words led to her suicidal demise. Mr Jide's stigmatization led to the demise of his secretary whom alone had the password to the safe where his companies documents laid. It cost him the most expensive contract he had ever received, as the notification and deadline was 2days befo...
