RELEVANCE
3rd June 2015 became a historic date in the life of Tunde after he realized how much time he had wasted working in an organization for three years without being desired.
It is in the business culture of Suntex Global, a service based company, to review individual staff strength and contribution on various parameter after every three years. This unconventional practice always put their staff on their best performance as it decides if you were going to remain or be advised to resign. The most important parameter has always been how relevant each staff day to day business attitude impacts the organization. How much value does each staff add to the firm?
Tunde happens to be a young man who is not only reserved, but comfortable with a normal isolated life. He has been approached several times by his supervisors about how much a good communication and relationship life can help him remain relevant, yet he played deaf ears. He always prided in his academic smartness, affluence of his home and a needlessness to associate with people whom he felt were not in his class. Yes he gets the job done, but only within the confines of a manual. Nothing creative, nothing out of the box.
Just two days to the release of the top performance staff appraisal report, he hesitantly attended a leadership conference in Lagos. The very first he had ever agreed to attend all along his adult life. That was the program that struck the last chord that broken his camel back. He got a clearer glimpse of how useless his existence has been without adding value to lives around him. There and then he decided to become more intentional with his life.
First thing on that blissful Monday morning, Tunde hurried down to the office, and went straight to his boss to apologize about his weird life and how much lessons he has learnt, coupled with a decision to become better. While his boss stood in awe about his sudden humility, he tearfully announces to him that the die is cast, the decision sealed and the report published. Just at that moment he bent down in tears as he watched his financial hope crumble. Two weeks before this day, he had lost his father to cancer; his business had run down, as finance from the firm was used to battle his life from the cold hands of cancer till he died.
Had the letter on his desk read “You are advised to resign.” It would have been fairer, but it was a stern intentional choice of words that shattered his hopes and plunged him into depression. The words carefully written in red italic read “You have never showed relevance in this firm, and we can no longer condone your character deficiencies, your service is hereby terminated, your absence will not be felt as your services are no more desired .”
Many young people today live with this reality, though no one may have told them, but they are only mere individuals whose existence means no value to anybody. Many still celebrate their unwillingness to change or become better versions of themselves, and this has left them living without being desired even while they are still present in a place. We live in a world where you must intentionally make yourself relevant to have relevance in the minds of people. We live in an era where only a deliberate action toward personal development can bring positive results.
How relevant are you to people around you?
What comes to the mind of people when they think about you in your absence?
What lessons have your actions taught its recipients?
What schools of taught guide your daily living and behavior?
What are you living for?
When last did you examine your relevance in the life of your friends or are you just a pest?
The truth is this, only a Godly life can understand relevance the God-way, and Make sustainable Difference with their lives. If you really want to live that life of legacy, draw your inspiration from the creator on relevance and greatest difference maker of time.
Only a value driven life can add value in the life of other people, and only one who adds value to his environment and people around him/her will live a life that will be desired and make a difference.
