Communication in Leadership
''Would you shut up your dirty mouth there!''
''How dare you talk when I'm talking... You want to prove you're right and I am wrong right?''
''Don't give me that foolish excuse, I'll deal with you soon.''
Those are some common lines you hear from provoked ''bosses'' that have problem with communication within their organizations. The flare up at the slightest provocation. They rein insults and threats even without knowing the true details of the situation. They treat their subordinates with disdain after a single mistake and never want to be corrected, not even by a third party. They lack trust in their subordinates and this is matched with a trepidation filled working condition whenever the boss is within the promise. Innovation is killed! Creativity is murdered on the altar of fear of being wrongly accused and misunderstood. Team leaders who have same mindset are over burdened with responsibilities, to the point that they choose to do everything themselves because they cannot effectively communicate to their team mates.
The place of communication in leadership cannot be underestimated, unless the plan is to crash the organization, or destroy the relationships and every element of trust. Large Cooperation spend millions of Dollars yearly on training their staff on effective communication in business. The reason behind this, is the face that just one wrong one is enough to spark a fire that will destroy an edifice built in 10years.
As a leader, you need to understand the tenets of communication leadership. How best to respond to your colleagues and subordinates. How best to react to situations that tends to work antithetical to your visions and goals. How best to handle conflicts and crisis in the work place (no matter how little it is). How best to appreciate your staff, and be a moral support to them. Best ways to motivate them into being more productive that ever. How best to build trust through communication, such that they can communicate with you their scintillating ideas.
I hence enjoin you today, Dear (potential) Leader, to read books on effective communication, Attend seminars, workshops, leadership conferences on communication. Attend communication trainings and build your public speaking and communication skills. It is a pivotal skill in the 21st century skill set of Legacy Leadership!
