Letter of Value: Dear Parent!

Dear Parent,

I trust you're doing great. Quite recently,  I've been doing some thinking about parenthood,  studying some families with different societal classes,  and have discovered indeed that parenting is not rice and beans with friend plantain and fish! May God strengthen your minds.

I write to dare you to help my grieving heart. My findings made me question the understanding you have while going into parenthood. It's painful that poverty has become almost a household co-tenant in many African homes,  but beyond your financial in capacities,  why have you water the seeds of drought in our value system?

You blame lack of finances as the reason why your children are not being sent to great schools,  yet the average level once you send them to, you ignore their life styles and pressure them into living ruthlessly without reckon to values both those sluggishly flashed in the school and those you subconsciously bastardize at home.

I write to challenge you to run away from the falsehood and impression that money answers all things. This has been the lie that has robbed the children of the rich a good mindset as well as the children of the poor a sound value system.

While it's painful that money has insulted you despite your struggle and hustles, isn't it foolish being both financially poor,  and also letting your kids have poverty of the mind and values? How long shall you be defeated by poverty with a win of 2-0?

While you hustle and pray for breakthrough,  why not focus on building blues in your children and giving them a better understanding of the principles of right living?  A choice to do this will not only make them more relevant beyond financial availability but will make them value the worth of 1kobo earned.

While you find it tough to provide 3 square meals for them,  why not teach them the virtue of Gratitude and Contentment,  that they may understand the insatiability of human wants even in the midst of limitless financial capacities?  This will help them appreciate every little progress they make and this is an invaluable principle for success in life.

While you covet the comfortability of the rich,  why not teach them that they should avoid hating people who are above them,  but recognize that in due time hardwork and diligence will pay up for their struggles and expectations? Let them know that you cannot attract what you condemn or speak evil against out of jealousy. This value will make them differentiate between the perils of jealousy and the realization power of positive admiration.

Whether Financially bouyant or monetarily impoverished, 21st centuries greatness will not lie in the financial strength of citizens, but in the reinvented mindset of humans with a refurbished Value system that works.

The best legacy in life has never been money, they've always been intangible products built on character and personality that sustains moral principles, Biblical Policies and a sound Value System.

From the depths of my conscience I plead with you dear parent. Rich or Poor,  Affluent or struggling. Beyond your financial status, build capacity in your kids. Spend your time helping them develop,  imbibe and live out Values that sustain wealth and success. Teach them to understand that the intangible skills of life, characters of people,  and lifestyles that aren't money induced are the best set of tools to attain a greater level of relevance.

I know this may be a bit tough path to follow with obvious financial pains slapping you even when you dream, but trust me, We can't be richer than our mindset. No poverty is damning and depressing as that of the mindset.

You can Make the Difference in your family and kids today if you'll rechanel your efforts towards building them up much more than in making a money that bad character will denigrate and render worthless.

From a heart that cares deeply about our young ones,

Daniel Obiyo.
