Silence!!!!!
Mr Emeka and his colleague had a little occupttional friction at work due to mis-information. The quarell was an internal one that was duely settled, but thereafter, caused the demotion of Mr Uche. The news of this got to the management by Miss Lydia, whose office was the next door. She had eavesdropped on the conversation and given a false, unrequested information to the H.R manager whose strict nature was on another level. A querry was served, before you could say 'Jack-Robinson', a demotion was the penalty for Mr. Uche whose side of the controversy was slightly complex.
Had the quarel been settled?
Was it necessary reporting the case?
Did Lydia have moral grounds to speak about such?
Would demotion have been served if Miss Lydia kept SILENCT about an event she was not sure of?
The answer to all those quetions are NO!
The place of Silence in human relationship and leadership is as intrinsic as the need to communicate. The irony of the truth is that Silence is part of communication! Surprised? YES! If you dont keep silent enough, you would speak when you shouldnt speak, and land yourself into regret. It is said ''...Silence is Golden". This statement reflects the power of silence in calming situations, stiring away wrath, calming boiling nerves and escaping traps set by people.
Ben Franklin rightly advised, Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.
Many people have wrongly spoken words that have caused them their happiness and some their life. Some employees have wrongly expressed their pains to the wrong channel of communication, to the point that it have caused them their jobs. Many employers have divulged business secrets in bits to curious, nefarous competitors and lost their market value. While someothers, have spoken about intimate problems shared with them by their employees, to ears that should not hear such. This has caused them their trustworthiness and Integrity.
Words are so powerful than the bullet of the most sophisticated gun! Its power lies in its ability to inflict both interim and longterm pains that can last for decades. A bullet wound can heal, and the scar cleared, but words spoken decades ago, can remain as fresh wound in the hearts of some people uptil date.
Being at the helm of affairs does not give you the right to hurt people with your words. Having the freedom of speech does not guarantee your freedom after speech nor is it a licence to bully people with your words, Silence make you appear wise even when you foolish thoughts flow thru your mind. Silence helps you articulate information well before making contribution. Silence saves you the need to apologize for injuries irrationality inflicts. Silence makes you a bit more rational than you would have been and gives you the demeanor of a composed personality.
A leaders words is as influential as his actions and reactions. Its true that communication is the language of leadership, but uncontrolled words can ruin your impact as a leader. It takes one hurtful word to reduce your trustworthines and cooperation of your team members.
Friends, this call to silence has a scope!
Keeping silent when you should speak is cowardice and negligiece. Its too bad for the effectivenesss of leadership. The call to silence is not call to aid and abet crime or watch things crumble. Its not a call to an introverted nature. It is rather, a call to frugality in speech. Its a call to speak words that edify, add value, and promotes the progressive growth of any worthwhile course. It is a call to only speak when speaking is relevant, didactic and golden. It is a call to always ensure that as a leader, you make a difference with your words as well as your actions.
Words are powerful, Silence is Golden, but expressing the both in the right combination makes a Leader Phenomenal, Effective, and an astute Personality. You know why? Cos, Meaniful silence is more profound than meaningless words.
